Keynote Address

Communicating from the Frontline: Research-Based Tools and Techniques for Communicating Effectively about High Concern/High Stress Issues

Dr. Vincent Covello is founder and Director of the Center for Risk Communication. Over the past 25 years, he has held numerous positions in academia and government, including Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences and Clinical Medicine at Columbia University. Prior to his joining the faculty at Columbia, Dr. Covello was a senior scientist at the White House Council on Environmental Quality in Washington, DC, a Study Director at the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences, and the Director of the Risk Assessment Program at the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Covello received his doctorate from Columbia University and his B.A. with honors and M.A. from Cambridge University in England. He is on the editorial board of several journals and is the Past President of the Society for Risk Analysis, a professional association with over 2,500 members. Dr. Covello has authored or edited over 25 books and over 75 published articles on risk assessment, management, and communication.

Awards Luncheon and Business Meeting

At lunch on Friday, we will hold our annual business meeting. The agenda will include the official passing of the gavel, induction of new officers, and a preview of the 2009 and 2010 conferences.

The honors committee will also announce the individual(s) selected to receive the DRM distinction and the Innovative Risk Management Solutions Award. This event will also recognize all emeritus members.

Campus Public Safety

Jeff Allison - FBI - Homeland Security

This session will address the issue of Campus Public Safety in a Homeland Security Environment. Given growing concerns over the potential eruption of violence on campuses, crisis management is a concern to us all. Come to this general session and hear from Mr. Allison, whose job involves coordinating with higher education on FBI and Department of Homeland Security Issues.
