Code of Conduct

Thank you for being part of our community. To ensure the best possible experience for all members, we have established some basic guidelines for participation.

By joining and using this community, you agree that you have read and will follow these rules and guidelines. This is a great medium with which to solicit the advice of your peers, benefit from their experience, and participate in an ongoing conversation. Technical and membership questions should be directed to the URMIA National Office via the Contact Us link on this site.

Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with these important guidelines and our site's Privacy Policy. In order to preserve a climate that encourages both civil and fruitful dialogue, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate membership in this community for anyone who violates these rules.

The Rules

  • Don't challenge or attack others. The discussions and comments are meant to stimulate conversation not to create contention. Let others have their say, just as you may.
  • Apart from the affiliate member community, do not post commercial messages on any discussion list, resource library entry, or other area where others might see it. Contact people directly with product and service information if you believe it would help them.
  • Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists and in the libraries is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
  • All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited.
  • Please note carefully all items listed in the disclaimer and legal rules below, particularly regarding the copyright ownership of information posted.
  • Remember that other participants have the right to reproduce postings to this site unless you specify otherwise.
  • Post your message or documents only to the most appropriate lists or libraries. Do not spam several lists or libraries with the same message.
All messages must add to the body of knowledge. We reserve the right to reject any message for any reason.
  • Except for posts to the affiliate member community, discussion messages should be considered confidential. When using information on the URMIAnetwork in a published article or forwarding discussion messages to non-members, remember to contact discussion post and article authors to obtain their permission prior to publishing members' content or comments.
  •  Note that messages posted on the affiliate member community may be used freely unless restricted by copyright.

Discussion Group Etiquette

  • Include a signature on all messages. Include your name, title, URMIA member organization name, and location.
  • State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.
  • Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply. Delete any header information, and put your response before the original posting.
  • Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone can benefit from.
  • Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals--not to the entire list. Do this by using the "Reply to Sender" link to the left of every message.
  • Do not send administrative messages, such as remove me from the list. Instead, use the web interface to change your settings or to remove yourself from a list. If you are changing e-mail addresses, you do not need to remove yourself from the list and rejoin under your new e-mail address. Simply change your settings.
  • Warn other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at the beginning of the message body with a line that says "Long Message."
  • Regarding posts to the affiliate members community and the Affiliate Innovative Resources library:
    • Please refrain from cross-posting AIR content to other discussion communities
      • Your content will be distributed in the All Members community by the URMIA National Office. A monthly digest of AIR content will be sent to the All Members community around the end of each month.
      • Contributors are allowed to send links to the content in private messages to other members.
      • Contributors may also share the monthly AIR digest with colleagues.
    • AIR posts should contain an attachment or link to a substantive document that focuses on new solutions to problems facing higher education or new thinking about existing approaches.
    • AIR messages should contain analysis of a problem and a description of the solution and its benefits.
    • The posting itself should contain a summary description of attachments.
    • Members are presumed to have permission to use the documents provided in the affiliate member community as they see fit unless the document clearly states restrictions on reproduction and use.

Special Cases

Affiliate Members Community

Affiliate members may post information that contains a commercial message only to the Affiliate Members community. These posts are subject to the following rules:

  • All posts to the affiliate member community will be moderated by National Office staff.
  • Commercial messages posted to any community other than the affiliate member community will be deleted without notification to the author.
  • Commercial posts should describe affiliates' solutions to problems facing higher education with an emphasis on new solutions and/or original approaches to existing solutions.
  • Information must be provided freely. Any post that requires members to pay to see content will be deleted without notification to the author.
  • Event marketing should be for free events only. Any event registration that requires members to pay to attend will be deleted without notification to the author.

Retiree Members Community

The retiree discussion group permits its use for both professional and social messages.  Some examples of appropriate messages include:

  • Relationship issues with former employer
    • How to handle requests for clarification of issues handled during employment on a compensated or uncompensated basis (claims, insurance purchase decisions, investigations, etc)
    • Considerations for working for former employer as a temporary employee (such as a fill-in during search for permanent employee), as a part-time employee or as a consultant
  • Consulting opportunities (successful strategies for work, considerations)
  • Retirement activities (advice in finding rewarding experiences in volunteering; navigating social security, Medicare and supplemental medical insurance; grandparenting)
  • Hobby interests (travel, golf, tours)
  • Reunions (find out who might attend a regional or annual conference, availability for a get-together when visiting someplace)
  • Remembrances and reflections (alerting colleagues that someone is ill or has lost a close family member, honoring a deceased colleague, recalling a particularly challenging risk management issue)
  • Open invitations to retiree members for upcoming URMIA events

Otherwise, the above rules and etiquette apply.
