Furthering the profession of higher education risk management is one of URMIA's primary goals. The URMIA Journal provides a venue in which members, risk management professionals, and educators can share scholarly articles detailing case studies, risk management issues, legal and regulatory issues, research, and many other more in-depth topics. Developing and submitting articles detailing your experiences and knowledge to share with fellow URMIA members and risk management practitioners helps further the collective competency and excellence of those involved in higher education risk management and insurance as a whole.
Step 1: Submission Overview
- For a list of potential article topics, please click here. Note that these are only suggestions; if you have questions about potential topics or have an idea for a topic that would be of interest, please contact the URMIA National Office. We encourage you to submit articles based on your own risk management expertise, interests, research, and projects.
- Submissions that appear to be selling a product or service will not be considered for inclusion in the URMIA Journal.
- The deadline for article submissions is Friday, March 12, 2010, with a targeted URMIA Journal publication date in July 2010. To view the projected schedule and required due dates for authors, click here.
Step 2: Article Guidelines
- Length: Articles should be approximately 2,500-7,000 words in length, focus on risk management in higher education, and be of interest to a large segment of the URMIA membership. Articles can be a collaborative endeavor with multiple authors.
- Layout and Formatting: Please do not provide extensive layout or formatting information in your submission. Since all articles will be formatted to follow the same style conventions, submit a basic Microsoft Word document including the following:
- Article title and any headers or sub-headers noted throughout the text
- Endnotes and citations (see next bullet for endnote information)
- Paragraph breaks
- Any text you would like to be italicized or bolded
- Endnotes: Any information that came from a different source must be cited in your submission, and these citations must be submitted in a standardized endnote format. URMIA follows the Chicago Manual of Style. For information on how to insert and format endnotes in a Microsoft Word document, click here.
- Supporting Graphics: Charts, tables, photos, graphs, and other supporting information must be submitted electronically but will be reformatted for publication. If charts have been created in Microsoft Excel, send the spreadsheet containing the original data as an attachment with your article submission. All photos should be submitted as high-quality digital versions/scans. Submissions should clearly indicate the proposed placement of supporting matter in the article text. Note that the publication layout will dictate final placement of supporting materials.
- Author Information: For each author, please include a brief biographical statement and a high-resolution digital "headshot" photograph (should be a JPEG, PNG, or GIF image in at least 150 pixels/inch resolution).

Step 3: Selection
- The URMIA Communications Committee serves as the URMIA Journal’s editorial board. Its members will review all article submissions for acceptance and work with the author to maintain quality and length.
- Authors will be notified of acceptance, rejection, or any initial edits that must be made before acceptance by early April.
- A stipend of $300 per article will be paid for each accepted article to the URMIA Journal.
Ready to Submit your Article?
- Send final drafts of article submissions by Friday, March 12, 2010, as Microsoft Word attachments to the URMIA National Office at urmia@urmia.org. Remember to send supporting material, author biographies, and high-quality headshots along with your article submission.
- If you would like to submit your article on disc, please mail it to:
- Christie Wahlert, URMIA, P.O. Box 1027, Bloomington, IN, 47402
