EDUCATIONAL SESSION - Total Cost of Risk: How to Collect Data, Crunch the Numbers, and Communicate Cost of Risk to Others
|
| |
|
D. Jean Demchak
Managing Director
Marsh |
| |
|
In a difficult economic environment, higher education will be scrutinized for the true costs of all aspects of our business. As the Total Cost Of Risk (TCOR) gains acceptance as a benchmarking and communication tool, the need for standardization increases. The dynamics of the higher education industry, its unique exposures, and the diverse risk profile among institutions require a consistent approach reflecting these factors. This session will review the basics of TCOR, a tailored approach for higher education with case studies, and provide suggestions for communication with senior management. |

The worst time to deal with the chaos that unfortunate events present is when they happen. Disasters - even small ones - don't use daily planners. They don't make appointments. They often arrive quickly and without warning, abruptly turning normal routines upside down. Nothing can fully prevent a catastrophic occurrence, but smart planning can minimize the disruption and impact of a loss. This session will include an actual recent case study from a major commercial loss and discuss how that loss was mitigated and managed. Session attendees will also discuss why Pre Loss and Contingency Planning are so critical to any institution or organization.

As institutions of higher education expand their presence globally, there are new opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Along with these new opportunities come new challenges and risks related to financial, regulatory, cultural, and political issues. This session will look at the international risks facing many colleges and universities today and examine ways to prevent problems before they happen. |

EDUCATIONAL SESSION - Employee Practices Liability: Effectively Reducing Costs and Restructuring a Workforce in Higher Education
|
| |
|
Robert W. Mulcahy, Esq.
Partner
Michael Best and Friedrich LLP |
| |
|
Many colleges and universities continue to face difficult decisions while restructuring their workforce needs to adapt to the economic downturn. This session will focus on the options available for reducing personnel costs through a variety of methods, including furloughs, subcontracting payroll management, layoffs, and terminations.
If not well planned and implemented, employee reductions and personnel cost saving measures result in legal claims, survival guilt, and loss of loyalty. We will discuss best practices to ensure that these changes are legally sound and to avoid claims. We will also provide a checklist of considerations for the final day of employment. This interactive discussion will cover effective strategies colleges and universities can implement during these challenging times. |
