Learn about the benefits of incorporating sustainable practices into your organization, including improved employee productivity and satisfaction, team work, stewardship, leadership, reduction in energy costs, and decreasing your organization’s ecological footprint. The Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies (KCES), the first LEED Platinum Building in the California Community College system, will be discussed as a 17-year case study. The KCES is a model of stewardship, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and sustainability. Those organizations that are not incorporating long-term environmental and sustainability practices into every aspect of their operations may soon be “sunset” businesses, including academic institutions. In 2003, there were approximately 950 certified green projects ongoing in the United States. By 2010, the market value of new green building construction is expected to be $60 billion, and the market value for green renovations is projected to be $240 billion.
What are the implications of these green trends for risk managers? Consider this scenario: A fire at a university resulted in a loss of a building’s research wing. Local building ordinance required the 30-year old building to become LEED certified after a partial loss. Does your insurance program provide coverage for the costs to retrofit energy-efficient equipment, hire specialized green building engineers and architects, and obtain the mandated LEED certification? Whether you own a green building that has been certified in accordance with established environmental standards or have invested in sustainable environmental improvements to your property, this session will offer practical advice on ensuring your investment and commitment to being environmentally conscious are protected now and into the future.

This session is based on the knowledge and experiences of URMIA’s first class of International Fellows. The four URMIA Fellows spent an intense week in London, learning the history of Lloyd’s of London and how it operates today, witnessing the daily experiences of an underwriter, shadowing a broker, learning about emerging markets and compliance via risk register, getting an overview of the Turnbull Report, applying catastrophe modeling and its importance in the reinsurance market, discovering the challenges faced in gaining acceptance of fire sprinkler systems in the European market, and much, much more.
In addition to a brief overview of the URMIA International Fellowship Program, this session will provide you with a perspective of the strategic risk management process as required by the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) in comparison to Enterprise Risk Management in American colleges and universities. |

Colleges, universities, and the communities they serve host a wide variety of special events which seek to celebrate, entertain, foster good will, provide leadership, and support specific goals. Management of risk in special events is essential to the successful outcome of those events. This session will identify risk and present a model for analysis of losses. It will also propose the scope and structure for risk control, provide details in the transfer of risk, and discuss establishment of risk financing for losses related to special events. |

Register online or call the URMIA National Office 812-855-6683. You may use a credit card or request to be invoiced. Payment must be received in advance of the conference. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and materials.
Member Early Fee: $119
Non-Member Early Fee: $139
Late Fee (after 3/13/09): $25 added to the above registration fees
All cancellations and requests for refunds must be received in writing and are subject to a $25 administrative fee. Cancellations received after March 13, 2009, forfeit all registration fees, but substitutions will be accepted. Please allow 30 days following the conference for all refund processing.
If URMIA must cancel this conference for any reason, liability is limited to the registration fees paid only. URMIA is not responsible for other expenses incurred, including travel and accommodation fees. Payments to URMIA are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

URMIA Group Hotel Rate: $149 for single/double; hotel room rates are subject to applicable state and local taxes in effect at the time of check-in. Humphrey's Half Moon Inn & Suites is located on Shelter Island, just five minutes west of the San Diego International Airport and close to all of San Diego's attractions. A complimentary airport shuttle is available 7am to 10pm by calling the hotel at 619-224-3411 from the baggage claim area after retrieving luggage. Hotel guest parking is $10.00 per vehicle, per night.

From the airport, follow signs towards Terminal Access Road. Continue straight onto Terminal Access Road. Turn right at North Harbor Drive. Turn left at CA-209/Rosecrans street. Turn left at Byron Street/Shelter Island Drive. Continue to follow Shelter Island Drive. The hotel will be on your right.
