“I moved on to UW-Madison in July 1962. After being there a year, I felt the need to talk to others like myself who had to handle exposures found in a university. There were no lists or even any names. In October of 1963, I wrote to College & University Business asking if there existed an organization of insurance persons at the education level. None existed.”
—William Hustedt, University of Wisconsin and Founding Member of the Western Group

As URMIA launches our 50th Anniversary celebration in the year leading up to our 2019 Annual Conference, we begin the journey by reflecting on where we began. Did you know "risk management" wasn't part of our association's name until 1976? Or that our membership has grown from 71 member institutions in 1972 to over 700 institutions of higher education and supporting organizations?

Take a look at our newly revised Historic Compendium: The First 25 Years for more on how URMIA began, including some tremendous photos and notes from our early days!
