By Donna McMahon, Assistant Director and Risk Manager at University of Maryland, College Park and URMIA President.

It is a great honor and a privilege to be welcomed as the next president of your association. I must say, however, even though it’s been said before, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Their efforts and their successes form the foundation upon which we build as we all find our place in a continuum of effort and achievement. Some accomplishments will have been celebrated as milestones while other accomplishments may be more subtle. Still, it is important to remember that subtle gains can be of great importance in achieving much-desired milestones.

By Erin Mahrer, Senior Intelligence Analysts, XDS at iJET International.

President Barack Obama’s mid-December 2014 announcement that the United States would restore diplomatic relations and ease tensions with the Castro government ignited US travelers’, including students', interest in visiting Cuba. In defiance of a continuing ban on tourism, in the first three months of 2015, more than 50,000 US citizens visited the island, a 36 percent increase from the same period the year before. Returning travelers flooded travel blogs with pictures and stories of Cuba’s unique glamour, crumbling and romantic, and the number of visitors and those interested in visiting Cuba continued to grow. As of October 2015, travel companies and development agencies project that millions of US citizens will visit Cuba in the next decade, including many student travelers and study abroad students. However, students trying to reach the island in the next few years will find that every step of the trip, from arranging paperwork, flights and hotels, to staying safe and in contact with people back home is still complicated. Knowing what to expect can help travelers avoid some of the biggest pitfalls.

By Scott Wightman, Area Executive Vice President for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services.

Anyone involved in the management of higher education institutions in the United States will not normally make it far into a conversation with colleagues without the topic of enterprise risk management or compliance making its way in. There is mounting pressure from governing boards to be assured that risks surrounding the strategic mission of the organization, including the risks of non-compliance with an ever-growing list of laws and regulations, are being identified, measured and treated.

By Jenny Whittington, Executive Director of URMIA and liaison to the Inter-Association Alliances Committee.

Welcome to the board corner report from the Inter-Association Alliances Committee (IAAC). The IAAC was originally developed to promote URMIA within other affiliated higher education associations.  As the strength of URMIA’s profile has grown, the IAAC has taken a strategic approach to its support of related associations. This approach aligns with the committee’s mission to assist in advancing the reputation and visibility of URMIA as the preeminent (re)source in higher education risk management through partnerships and alliances with other associations that have an impact on and/or role in risk management in higher education. Strategic partnerships and alliances with educational partners are outlined in URMIA's business plan and managed by the IAAC. The business plan is updated each year to support the long-term goals in the strategic plan. At the October 14, 2015, board meeting the IAAC Committee solicited feedback from the board and chairs to confirm that the strategic educational partners aligned with URMIA’s goals.

The absolute truths of crisis management

By Joe DesPlaines, Business Continuity and Crisis Response Consultant for Districts Mutual Insurance.

For most of my career, I believed there were no universal truths in the business of crisis management. Given the differences in types of crises and responses, I thought that there could not be a “truth” that would apply to all circumstances. However, I am told that with age comes wisdom, and maybe that is true as I have come to realize that there may, in fact, be some universal truths of organizational crisis management that may help in understanding and managing a crisis.
