Regulatory Compliance

Regulatory Compliance

The regulatory landscape for higher education is vast and dynamic. Federal laws applicable to campus activities include those related to research, international activities, business transactions, gender equity, and hazardous materials, to name but a few. State and local laws and regulations add to the complexity and sometimes are more burdensome than federal regulations.

The following resources provide information concerning federal laws specifically as they relate to higher education. A complete analysis requires a review of local regulations in addition to the federal rules.

The Higher Education Compliance Alliance provides the higher education community with a centralized repository of information and resources for compliance with federal laws and regulations. Their website lists over 250 regulations and provides helpful resources to assist institutions in their efforts to be compliant.

URMIA’s Government and Regulatory Affairs Committee monitors federal legislation and regulatory rule-making for items and strives to keep members informed of laws and rules proposed and under revision. The Committee publishes regular GRC Blasts discussing regulations.

The URMIA Library has a file folder dedicated to Regulatory Compliance. In the folder are materials related to ten of the more challenging groups of regulations.
