Internships: A Win-Win for Risk Management Departments and Students

Consider applying for an URMIA internship grant in one of URMIA’s 2024 award cycles

Let URMIA Fund Your Risk Management Intern

For the third consecutive year, URMIA will be offering $7,500 grants to fund member institutions having an intern to help with risk management roles and responsibilities.

“I think anyone in the field would agree that familiarizing themselves with risk management concepts is great but applying them in a real-world setting is where the true learning takes place,” said Ben Schultheis, insurance and risk management director at the University of Kansas about their 2023 internship opportunity. “Thanks to URMIA, Ashley [Fisher, the University of Kansas’ intern] was able to gain real-world experience as she sets out to pursue a career in the insurance industry,” stated Schultheis.

“I was able to see how insurance looked from an insured perspective with claims and premiums and the importance of it,” shared Ashley Fisher. “Exploring topics such as youth on campus, drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging risk management topics provided a comprehensive view of the complex nature of risk in higher education.”

Another intern through URMIA’s grant program, Jeremiah Fisher, has planned ERM Talks at Florida A&M University. “This is an event where the ERM interns are collaborating with the Student Government Association which will allow students to be educated about ERM and assess the types of risks that the university may face. This collaborative approach will enhance the organization’s ability to anticipate and respond to risks that they may not know about and will give students the opportunity to weigh in on risks they may face,” shared Jeremiah Fisher.

URMIA’s first grant recipient, Vanderbilt University, had a similar role for their intern. Lupe Vélez Manriquez’s responsibilities included the risk identification and risk ranking of student organizations and property risk mitigation. She developed a process to rank and assess each student organization based on its relative risk to Vanderbilt University.

Be the Change Grant Opportunity Opens in March

Through the generous support of FM Global, an URMIA affiliate member, URMIA has been fortunate to have been able to award three Be the Change Internship Grants during the past two years.

The first 2024 application opportunity for the URMIA internship grant program will be available in March. The $7,500 award is to be applied to the student intern’s salary and related learning experience. The internship should be an 8-12 week program starting during the 2024 calendar year. The application deadline will be in June.

Lisa Zimmaro URMIA Internship Grant Application Period Starts in August

Through the generosity of an URMIA member donor, the association was able to expand its internship grant offering beginning in the last half of 2023. This third-quarter award is also a grant funding an internship at a member institution and is managed by the Spencer Educational Foundation. It was recently named to honor Lisa Zimmaro, a former URMIA member who lost her battle with cancer in 2021.

Zimmaro had served two terms on URMIA’s Board of Directors during her risk management career which began at Princeton University and continued at Temple University. She was the AVP for risk management and treasury with responsibility for domestic and international property and casualty programs at Temple. Beyond those duties, Zimmaro also served as an adjunct professor in Temple’s Fox School of Business, teaching about risk management and insurance.

“Lisa invested a tremendous amount of time cultivating the next generation of risk management – not just in higher ed, but in all industries,” said colleague Paul D. Pousson, managing director – higher education practice, at Gallagher.

Oklahoma City Community College was named as the first recipient of the Lisa Zimmaro URMIA Internship Grant. The second recipient is expected to be named from the applicants during the August-October 2024 process.
