Connecting for the Greater Good of Higher Ed Risk Management

Learn where URMIA is focusing efforts this year

Our Strategic Goals Remain the Driving Force

Connection is the theme for my presidency year and we are well underway enhancing opportunities within URMIA to make those broader ties within the higher education community.

URMIA’s strategic goals are providing the guidance for these connections including:

  • Connecting members to each other
  • Connecting members with professional development and resources
  • Connecting our actions to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Connecting with the future to ensure URMIA’s continued success and the success of our institutions

Reaching Outside the Traditional Risk Management Community

In particular, I want to see URMIA increase its collaborations with our higher education sister associations so that we are all serving the higher ed community in the most productive ways. We are working with these partner organizations to create risk-related content for their membership and to present on risk management areas at their conferences to build the URMIA brand and highlight the roles all of us play related to an institution’s risk.

I’m challenging us to work with the different areas that manage risk on campus to make us stronger not only as individuals, but also as campus partners ultimately having the higher education industry be viewed as a better risk. This path leads us to enterprise-wide risk management.

Connecting Internally Too

I’m looking forward to seeing our members – our family, if you will – at the various URMIA events both in-person and online. Our first opportunities in person are at the upcoming regional conferences where we are offering some great programs, some in collaboration with ACCED-I and the University of Texas System.

I encourage each of you to get involved in some way with URMIA.

  • Engage with your association by finding and sharing an URMIA resource with someone else on campus. Collaborate on the development of a policy by taking samples from other institutions or information from our affiliate members to create what fits for your college or university. And, of course, don't forget to share with the URMIA community what you've developed to help build our repository of resources.
  • Forward the URMIA Career Center to your HR department as a resource for connecting with potential job candidates.
  • Share the URMIA insurance programs with your campus colleagues in orientation, conferences and events, and the various areas offering camps to help them with insurance requirements.
  • Volunteer with URMIA. We anticipate having more opportunities added over the next couple of months.
  • Review the discounts offered URMIAns on a variety of professional development opportunities which may help you on your risk management journey.
  • Register for a webinar, conference, Water Cooler Discussion, or Community Conversation and pick up not only some information but maybe even a colleague to add to your professional network.
  • Submit a proposal to present a webinar, write an article, or facilitate a discussion. For the latter, we aren’t looking for experts necessarily (although we love those, too). Just someone with an interest in a topic that’s willing to throw out some questions to keep the conversation going.
