Nels Pate, Jr. at Bethune-Cookman University

Title:

Director of Risk Management & Insurance

Hometown:

Orlando, Florida

Alma Mater:

Columbia College and Bethune-Cookman University

What was your first job?

As a teenager, I worked in a mail room for an insurance company. As an adult, I worked in a kitchen for a major hotel chain.

How did you start your career in risk management?

I transitioned into the risk management role after my position as the associate campus safety director was eliminated, and no one applied for the risk management position.

Years in Risk Management:

3

Role in URMIA this year:

I attended my first URMIA Annual Conference in 2023.

What's the biggest change you've seen in the risk management and insurance industry since you've been in it?

Risk Management Changes: The increase in the number of emerging risks such as AI and cyber risks. Insurance Changes: The significant increase of property insurance.

What emerging risks concern you the most?

Climate change. Due to the world getting warmer, we have seen the rapid intensity and frequency of hurricanes to develop from Cat 1 to Cat 5 which occurred several times this past hurricane season. Also, the increase of other weather-related phenomena that occur across the country.

What's the most interesting situation you've encountered in your job?

Filing a claim for a major floor that impacted one of our residential halls. Working with our assigned adjuster really helped me understand the various aspects of claim adjusting. It was also helpful in determining actions that could be taken/implemented to prevent future flooding in other residential hall buildings. As a result of the subrogation actions that are still taking place, I understand the need to ensure that proper documentation takes place in the form of inspections before and after an incident.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Appreciating the opportunity that I have to prevent or mitigate adverse outcomes to protect the university against risk exposures.

What do you most appreciate about URMIA?

The resources, training, and wealth of knowledge that members are willing to share and assist you with challenges that you might be having.

What's your favorite book, movie, and/or hobby?

I enjoy grilling and trying new techniques on my various barbeque grills.

What is your favorite beverage and/or food?

I love seafood and barbeque.

What do your friends and family think you do?

They think that I only deal with accidents and filing claims.
