That’s a Wrap for URMIA’s 2024

Review the association’s numbers from last year’s activities

URMIA Continues to Expand Offerings to Higher Ed Risk Managers

As we hit the ground running in 2025, last year’s accomplishments warrant a brief pause in our work to reflect on what a good year URMIA had.

Chart of URMIA membership numbers 2022 - 2,834 members; 2023 - 3,035 members; 2024 - 3,145 members; 630 member institutions, 901 campuses in URMIA, 147 organizational affiliates; pie chart showing largest sector of membership as institutional, then affiliate members, then retiree members, then student members; 138+ hours of professional development, 111 new URMIA Library entries, 13 podcasts in 2024; 18 scholarships awarded; 1923 TULIP policies purchased; 866 2024 annual conference in-person attendees; 202 2024 annual conference virtual attendees; 65 attendees at 2024 Central Regional Conference; 107 attendees at 2024 Northeastern Regional Conference; 42 attendees at 2024 International Regional Conference

There Are More URMIAns Than Ever Before

Reaching 3,145 individual members at the end of 2024 was something for the association to celebrate, but what that number really means is even more impressive. Each URMIA member now has easy access to 3,144 others who know what higher education’s risk managers are dealing with and, essentially, has more than 3,100 colleagues who they can query for advice.

Networking is a big draw for why people join URMIA as members know they aren’t alone in the challenges they are facing on their campuses. If you aren’t utilizing the community of 3,145 others who “get” what you do, make it a resolution to reach out to the URMIA community in 2025.

More Membership Numbers

For the curious, the association has representation on (just slightly) more than 900 campuses globally. This includes 16 campuses in Australia, 14 institutions in Canada, two New Zealand campuses, and one institution in each of the countries of Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.

In addition to the campus representation, URMIA is proud to have 147 organizations – our affiliate members - that offer products and services to meet the needs of those in higher ed’s risk management roles.

We welcomed 88 new member organizations – either those who had never been in URMIA before or ones who had been members previously but had let their membership lapse – into the community last year.

Keeping up Those Risk Management Skills

Is there ever a day on campus you aren’t surprised by something new? Whether it’s a request from a student group asking if they can Slip ‘N SlideTM down the steepest campus hill or a colleague asking where students should be allowed to charge their e-scooters, there’s always something to learn about mitigating risks. URMIA offered more than 130 hours of professional development last year to help you address, if not stay ahead of, what risk managers are facing on campus.

We also added 111 resources to the URMIA Library to help members have information, templates, and samples at their fingertips. For those who enjoy listening to URMIAns talk about risk management issues, we also produced 13 podcasts throughout the past year.

And our discussion on professional development offerings certainly wouldn’t be complete without information about the 2024 Annual Conference in New Orleans. While we didn’t count how many participated in the Second Line from the hotel to the opening event, we do know that 866 of you were able to join us in NOLA and another 202 attendees followed along online and picked up some interesting tips, ideas, and connections.

Win-Win Programs for Members and the Association

Some programs and services that URMIA offers are good for members and help keep membership dues as low as possible. The insurance programs URMIA offers – liability coverage for third parties hosting camps or events on institution-owned property and student property insurance coverage - do just that. While we don’t have numbers on all three programs for 2024, we do know that 1,923 Tenants’ and Users’ Liability Insurance Policies (TULIP) were sold to protect institutional members’ facilities. All three of URMIA’s insurance programs offer a convenient, vetted option for third parties or students and their parents for coverage that is required or recommended while on campus. The royalties from these programs are applied to the association’s bottom line.

Building on the Successes of 2024

URMIA’s Board of Directors and committee chairs are finalizing the strategic goals for 2025 and the staff has released a calendar full of online presentations for the first quarter, set the programs for four regional conferences happening in March and April, issued calls for volunteers in many areas to get help launching other member benefits and services, and mapped out marketing plans to keep members informed of the types of URMIA information they are most interested in.

Stay tuned to URMIA throughout 2025 for ways we can continue our partnership in advancing the profession of higher education risk management.
