Bio

Pamela J. Rypkema is the risk manager at Marymount University and has a unique blend of insurance, legal, and risk management experience spanning twenty-eight years. Before coming to Marymount, Ms. Rypkema served as Risk Manager for Gallaudet University, consulted with more than 100 schools across the United States with United Educators Insurance, presenting dozens of seminars on a wide range of risk management topics and authoring risk management materials, and practiced law with the firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen. At Gallaudet University, Ms. Rypkema chairs the institutional Conflict of Interest Committee, manages the whistleblower and workers' compensation programs, serves on the Crisis Leadership Team, helps the campus community to manage risk, and resolves claims against the institution. She has served as the institution's risk manager since 2005. Ms. Rypkema earned CPCU and Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designations from the American Institute for Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters and was a licensed insurance broker until 1990. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1984, Juris Doctorate from the Washington College of Law (WCL) at American University in 1991 (serving as Associate Editor of WCL's Law Review), and her Master's in Business Administration from George Mason University in 2011. Ms. Rypkema is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bar Associations, the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), the University Risk Management & Insurance Association (URMIA), and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).
