Bloomington, Ind. – The University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) announces that it will launch a year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary at this year’s annual conference in Salt Lake City, September 29-October 3, 2018. "Community, Innovation, Education: Celebrating 50 Years of Advancing Risk Management" will highlight the association’s history and accomplishments, as well as the value of risk management in protecting institutions of higher education. The year will close with festivities and the unveiling of a strategy looking into the future at URMIA’s 50th Annual Conference in Boston, September 16-19, 2019.
The theme of the anniversary celebration reflects URMIA’s guiding values: community, innovation and education. A special section of URMIA’s website gives a panoramic view of the association’s history, stories and testimonials submitted by individuals who have been involved over the years, pictures spanning URMIA’s first 50 years and much more. It also provides links to upcoming anniversary-year events.
The association, whose mission is to advance the discipline of risk management in higher education, originated in 1969. Initially called the University Insurance Managers Association (UIMA), the name changed to URMIA in 1976 to reflect the broader concept of the emerging field of risk management. Dedicated volunteer leaders managed URMIA for many years; its first staff member was hired in 2006.
Today, members continue to be actively involved in the operation of URMIA. According to current URMIA President Samuel Florio, Santa Clara University, "Our greatest resource as an association is our members. As we celebrate this tremendous milestone, we recognize it has only been accomplished through the efforts and dedication of so many individuals. These individuals have made an indelible mark on risk management in higher education and we look forward to sharing their stories. Over the next year, we are excited to reflect on our past and continually enhance our vision for the future.”
