Find ways to engage with URMIA as a volunteer and reap the rewards of giving back
Building a Stronger URMIA
URMIA volunteers are a community of people giving back so others can get ahead. Their time and talent create a stronger, more engaged community of higher education risk management and insurance professionals – and we’re so grateful for our community of game changers.
Whether our volunteers share their experience as a webinar speaker, help tag URMIA Library resources, lend their expertise on a committee or task force, or send monthly emails to new members welcoming them to the organization, they are all taking action to help our community be stronger and creating a place where everyone can thrive.
Like Robert Clark, Jr., chief audit and compliance officer at Howard University, our volunteers have found their purpose through the donation of time.
“We volunteer to give back. To pay it forward. To live out servant leadership,” shared Clark. “I am where I am in my career and life because others have poured into me. Having an opportunity to volunteer and give back to URMIA has been a wonderful experience. We give, not to receive, but because it is the right thing to do. But what one receives in return is the blessing of knowing we are helping serve others.”
Volunteer for Yourself and Your Health
While URMIA greatly benefits from the work of our volunteer corps, giving back provides benefits to ones doing the volunteering, too. Some of those benefits of being a volunteer include:
- Making a difference in people's lives
- Improving your self-esteem, confidence, and well-being
- Gaining invaluable work experience
- Receiving high-quality training and developing new skills
- Using existing skills and knowledge to benefit the community
According to the Mayo Clinic, volunteering has health benefits as well:
- Improves physical and mental health
- Provides a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills
- Nurtures new and existing relationships
Pick the Volunteer Roles That Fit Your Schedule and Interests
Volunteering opportunities within URMIA come in many shapes and sizes. The association has positions that are considered one-and-done – meaning you complete the task and your volunteer role is complete – as well as those roles that ask for your time on a more regular basis and may even include a regular cadence of Zoom meetings.
“Whether you're new to URMIA or a long-time member, there are countless ways to engage, and there is something for everyone,” says Thomas Kaplan, northeast education leader at Willis. “The professional development and the relationships I've built along the way have been most rewarding for me. I've learned so much from this incredible community, many of whom I now consider close friends. It can't be better than this when you can learn with your close friends!”
If you have some time, energy, and enthusiasm to share with URMIA, we’d love to have you as part of our volunteer community. Check out our current opportunities to get involved. Don’t see anything that interests you, check back as we add opportunities throughout the year or let us know you are interested in volunteering and we’ll contact you when we have something that fits your interests/skills.
