What Is Your Current Role and Institution, and How Long Have You Been There

I currently serve as the director of risk and insurance services at Brigham Young University. I have been employed at the university for ten and a half years.

How Did You Find Your Way into Higher Ed Risk Management

I worked professionally as an insurance producer for The Leavitt Group after graduating from Brigham Young University in 2004. I was motivated to obtain as much education as possible early in my career. As I attended the CIC and CRM courses, I was always intrigued by the stories and experiences shared by many of the instructors who were risk and insurance professionals themselves, many of whom worked in higher education risk management (Steve Holland now retired from the University of Arizona was one of these). This was a spark that turned into a career move for me. I started in higher ed risk management in 2015 as the insurance manager at Brigham Young University. It seemed like a perfect fit: Higher ed risk management, working at my alma mater, and an emphasis on insurance.

What Motivated You to Volunteer with URMIA

I have been so blessed by the positive influence of others in the higher ed risk management community, especially in the URMIA community. I was looking for a way to give back or pay it forward. Last year, I saw the call for volunteers published by URMIA, and it seemed like a great way to contribute my time and my talents.

What's One Way Members Can Get More Value out of Their URMIA Membership

Jump in with both feet. Participate in the webinars, workshops, roundtables, and conferences, even if you must attend virtually. Don’t be shy. Turn on your camera, smile, and participate by actively engaging.

What's a Favorite Campus Tradition at Your Institution

I can think of two: Lighting the “Y” during BYU homecoming and the Blue Foam Slide event for incoming freshmen. I’ve included YouTube links for your enjoyment! Light the “Y” and Blue Foam Slide.
