Institutes Focused on Specific Risk Management Areas
In their inaugural year, the URMIA Institutes are being heralded as a great pilot with opportunities to build on the success in 2027. The three offerings in March were focused on ERM, risk emergency management, and finance and insurance, and the events varied in the level of risk manager they were targeted towards.
Attendees of the virtual institute left better equipped to address finance and insurance areas on campus, including alternate ways to finance risk, a deep dive into the claims management process, and how property insurance works in practice.
Enterprise risk management (ERM) was the focus of the institute offering in Baltimore. Attendees included those who are just looking at getting their programs off the ground and those who have a more mature ERM program and are looking for ideas to level up their program.
In Salt Lake City, participants discussed how to mitigate risks and improve responses to emergencies on campuses. One of the sessions focused on the decision-making process resulting in the state of Utah opting to purchase active assailant insurance for public universities based on real-life examples that were shared during the session.

What Is Next for the URMIA Institute Offerings
Based on the success of the 2026 URMIA Institutes, we look forward to offering in-person training opportunities on a variety of topics on member campuses in 2027. Plans include offering a one-and-a-half-day virtual training program.
You don’t have to wait until next year, though, for learning opportunities from URMIA. We plan to add more courses through the URMIAacademy which provides more of a self-study type of courses that can be completed at your own pace in addition to the robust content offered at the 2026 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, taking place October 10-14. Webinars and community conversations will also be offered regularly. Bookmark the URMIA event calendar to stay up on what's being offered to address today's risk management and insurance needs on campus.
