What Is Your Current Role and Institution, and How Long Have You Been There

I am the risk manager at the University of North Carolina, Greenville (UNCG) and I have been there for 16 years.

How Did You Find Your Way into Higher Ed Risk Management

I began my journey in the insurance industry in 1997, and experienced owning an agency, helping to expand it, and then going on to work as a risk manager for The Hartford Insurance Company. I spent a significant amount of time on the road, often working 60 to 80 hours a week. My husband was employed at UNCG and came across the posting for a risk manager, thinking it would be a great next step for us. At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I am deeply grateful for my journey and for the knowledge and opportunities provided by The Hartford, which have strongly supported me throughout my time at UNCG.

What Motivated You to Volunteer with URMIA

URMIA and its members were an invaluable asset and my primary resource as I transitioned into higher education risk management, which is why I wanted to pay it forward in any way possible.

Describe an URMIA Experience That Stands Out to You

I can’t narrow it down to just one thing. Both the members and the home office staff are consistently supportive and ready to help, often at a moment’s notice. With the expertise and generosity of my fellow URMIAns, I have never worried about navigating whatever comes my way.

What's one small action that's made a big difference in your risk management work?

One small action that has made a big difference in my risk management work is taking the time to follow up, early and often. Whether it’s clarifying insurance coverage, confirming expectations with campus partners, or documenting decisions in writing, consistent follow-up helps prevent misunderstandings from turning into claims or compliance issues. Those small touchpoints build trust, keep issues from falling through the cracks, and ultimately make risk management more proactive than reactive.
